Happy Father's Day

Father’s Day Weekend

Let the grilling begin! Thursday night Alan (my previous manager at WAKM) and Leah invited Chad and I over for dinner. We walked in to a welcoming glass of champagne. Leah did such a fantastic job on dinner: tomatoes and feta, pork tenderloin and sausage, grits, squash and zucchini. For dessert we had crema de tequila and cookies. We had a great time catching up with Alan and Leah and hope we can all get together again soon!

Friday I got off of work a little early. There is something about walking out of work on a Friday that makes you feel 100x better than when you walk out on any other day of the week. It also helped that Friday's weather made it a
roll down the windows and open the sunroof kind of day!

Chad and I woke up early on Saturday to drive to Troy and spend the rest of Father’s Day Weekend with my mom and dad. While trying to leave for Troy, I managed to get locked out of my apartment even though I had my keys with me. Yes, it happened. My key got jammed in the lock while I was locking the door. After waiting an hour and a half, I finally just took my key off my key chain and left the issue for the maintenance man. Luckily, I already had my car packed and my phone was locked out with me!

My mom makes the best cakes!! At 27, I’ve never baked a layered cake. The sad thing is I don’t even own a cake pan. That being said, my two favorite cakes are my mom's caramel cake and her key lime cake. I found CREATIVE GOLF CUPCAKES on Better Homes and Gardens Website for Father’s Day. I sent the link for the cupcakes to my mom. Click HERE for the link with the cupcakes that inspired us:

Instead of making cupcakes, mom made her key lime cake! We wrote Happy Father’s Day on a foam golf ball and added a golf tee. My dad loves golf and with Father’s Day and the US Open both this weekend, I think it turned out perfect!

One of my favorite things about my parents’ house is their back deck!!

Saturday night we grilled steak and salmon while catching up on the deck.

The bottle of wine we had before dinner had a quote on the cork. I’ve never seen a quote on the cork before, but I like it!

We woke up Sunday to run through Troy University’s campus, hit golf balls on the driving range, and have lunch with my Mema before heading back to Birmingham.

Weekend Movie: Man on a Ledge
Elizabeth Banks is a police psychologist and works to talk down an ex-con who is threatening to jump from a Manhattan hotel rooftop all while the biggest diamond heist ever committed is in motion. It’s a good movie, considering at least 75% of the movie is filmed with a man on a ledge. The title pretty much sums it up.

WHAT AM I LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS WEEK?
  • Lunch tomorrow to catch up with 5 people I used to work with at WAKM
  • New flooring in the kitchen and dining room

I hope everyone had a very HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

My Friday's Fancies - Outfit Crush

My Friday’s Fancies: “Outfit Crush”

This week’s theme came with the following description, “Whether it's a celeb spotting or a Pinterest find, I'm sure there's an outfit you'd love to re-create in your own way”

One of my favorite summer looks on Pinterest was pinned from a set on Polyvore. There is nothing I would change about the outfit and Polyvore already shows you exactly where you can purchase each piece in this outfit. Click here for outfit on Polyvore.

This means, I needed to pick another outfit to re-create. I love the Pinterest pin of this skirt with a button down.

I created my version and made it something I would wear. Here is my outfit crush!!

Jean Tribal Mix

J. CREW button down denim shirt with rolled sleeves, cream tribal embellished mini skirt, Jessica Simpson Camille Sandal, braided hip belt from MetroParkUSA.com, BIG BUDDA cross body purse (maybe I should have gone with a more simple purse but I fell in love with this one), Stella & Dot gold bangles, and Stella & Dot royal blue and gold drop earrings.
What I am most excited about today is my new purse!! I ordered it on Saturday and it was waiting for me at my front door when I got home from work yesterday.

Happy Friday!

Pinterest Wednesday - Laughter is Contagious

Laughter is Contagious

For the fourth Wednesday in a row I am linking with The Vintage Apple for another Oh, How PINTERESTing Wednesday. Today my pins are all animals pictures that make me laugh so I wanted to share them.

The caption nails this one:

Small dogs in clothes make me smile:

Imagine driving down the road on a stressful day and you look over and see this...

According to Pinterest, I pinned this one almost a year ago.
All I know is that I still think it is so, SO FUNNY:

Weekend Recap-2

I stayed in Birmingham this weekend. It was so overcast all weekend which made it such a great lazy weekend. Here are a few of my favorite things from this week/weekend:

1.   Chad had his last few days off of work. His new J-O-B starts today and I have to admit, I was a little jealous of his time off. It’s really hard to be productive at work when someone is sending you pictures like this:

2.   I bought ingredients to try a new dessert, but when my sweet tooth cravings come I need something right then. I didn’t have patience to mix ingredients together and I’ve made the pretzel Hershey Kisses with M&Ms from a recipe on Pinterest before.

Friday night, I had a few Rolos and pretzels but no M&Ms. I melted the Rolos on the pretzels on 350 for 3 minutes, took them out and added another pretzel to the top. They were good, but they were even better when I made Round 2 by cutting miniature Reese’s in half on Sunday (next time I’m buying the mini Reese’s to make things even easier). These might not be beautiful, but they are ridiculously easy and the perfect salty/sweet combination. These are great when it's just you and the last thing you need is an entire 9x13 pan of dessert.

3.   Saturday night we tried a new Mexican restaurant at The Summit. Lime Fresh Mexican Grill started in South Beach and opened its Birmingham location in late April. The ingredients were fresh and there were 6 different salsas to chose from – pico de gallo, black bean corn salsa, salsa verde, salsa asada, salsa suave, and habanero salsa. The chicken was delicious, but next time I am trying the fish tacos.

4.   Chad’s mom has been the Director of Children’s Ministry at a large local church in Birmingham for 17 years. She is retiring and last night was her last Sunday at the church. I was very impressed and inspired when she shared her motivational life story with the church last night. There was not an empty seat and she received a standing ovation.

5.   Better than any restaurant, GUESS WHAT ELSE IS COMING TO THE SUMMIT!! A MICHAEL KORS STORE IS OPENING IN AUGUST!

And of course we rented a movie...

Redbox Rental suggestion: GONE – Amanda Seyfried stars in Gone. Her character is convinced her sister has been kidnapped by the same man that kidnapped her the year before. This movie will definitely keep your attention.

I can't wait for next weekend. I'll be going to Troy to see my mom and dad for Father's Day!

Born to Run

Happy Friday!! My best friend Lacey always does great reviews of books on her blog - Southern in the City. She links up to the blog Blonde…Undercover Blonde for Book Club Fridays. Since National Running Day was this Wednesday, I decided to link up today and share my comments on the book Born to Run.

Born to Run  by Christopher McDougall

 Book Description /Synopsis
Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence. With the help of Caballo Blanco, a mysterious loner who lives among the tribe, the author was able not only to uncover the secrets of the Tarahumara but also to find his own inner ultra-athlete, as he trained for the challenge of a lifetime: a fifty-mile race through the heart of Tarahumara country pitting the tribe against an odd band of Americans, including a star ultramarathoner, a beautiful young surfer, and a barefoot wonder.

With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultrarunners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to the climactic race in the Copper Canyons. Born to Run is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

My Thoughts
I want to start by saying that I really don’t read many books. Earlier this year I read The Hunger Games Series and the books were all three exciting and easy reads. After finishing The Hunger Games Series I started on Born to Run. I enjoyed Born to Run!! I will admit at times it was harder to get into than I expected (but I do have a harder time reading non-fiction books).

Being a runner I was able to relate to many of the things McDougall wrote about, but one thing stands out that I couldn’t agree with McDougall on.
The book seems to blame high-tech running shoes for poor running form and injuries and talks highly of barefoot running. I do think runners need proper running shoes and that the best shoe or brand for one runner is not necessarily the best for the next runner. I just can’t imagine running barefoot. What happens if you step on a rock? I would completely fall apart. I am not brave enough to even try the five finger shoes. Socks and shoes are a must for running if you ask me.

I enjoyed all the running statistics in the book and I would like to share two of the items that surprised me the most.

Shocking Statistic #1
At the very beginning of the book, McDougall is referring to his recent running injury and states, “Take any other sport, and an injury rate like mine would classify me as defective. In running, it makes me normal. The real mutants are the runners who don’t get injured. Up to eight out of every ten runners are hurt every year. It doesn’t matter if you’re heavy or thin, speedy or slow, a marathon champ or a weekend huffer, you’re just as likely as the other guy to savage your knees, shins, hamstrings, hips or heels. Next time you line up for a Turkey Trot, look at the runners on your right and left: statistically, only one of you will be back for the Jingle Bell Jog.”

I knew runners got injured, but eight out of every ten runners? I now consider myself LUCKY, make that extremely lucky!

Shocking Statistic #2
Towards the end of the book McDougall refers to research done by Dr. Bramble and quotes the following statement by Dr. Bramble, “We monitored the results of the 2004 New York City Marathon and compared finishing times by age. What we found is that starting at age nineteen, runners get faster every year until they hit their peak at twenty-seven. After twenty-seven, they start to decline. So here’s the question - how old are you when you’re back to running the same speed you did at nineteen?”
You will never believe the age or at least I didn’t, it is 64!!! The difference between 27 and 19 is 8 and the difference between 64 and 27 is 37!! No wonder most of the runners in races are older. They can still run just as fast, if not faster, than younger runners.

My Final Thoughts
The book is a great motivational tool for past, present, and future runners. Thank you to Christopher McDougall for sharing his love of running as well as his knowledge.

Weekend Recap

Chad and I started out the weekend at a restaurant in Birmingham called Little Savannah. It is a restaurant and bar in an area of Birmingham known as Forest Park. The weather was nice so we sat on the back patio for dinner to celebrate Chad’s new job!! The menu at Little Savannah changes weekly based on the produce the chef purchases that week from local farmers. I had the gulf black grouper with grilled squash and zucchini and Chad had the grilled pork loin chop. I have such a sweet tooth so we finished dinner off with blackberry cobbler topped with ice cream and we clearly enjoyed the cobbler.

Friday afternoon I made Rolo Cake Mix Bars that I pinned a while back on Pinterest.
With only 4 ingredients, these were almost impossible to screw up. I don’t cook at all and my bars turned out edible! I did learn that there is a difference between evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk.

For the recipe see http://cookiesandcups.com/rolo-cake-mix-bars/. The recipe was part of the blogger’s CAKE MIX RECIPE week for busy people. I love yellow cake mix and you end up with a few extra ROLOS!

My Rolo Cake Mix Bars:

I took the Rolo Cake Mix Bars to Symphony in the Summer at Railroad Park on Friday night. It’s a free event at the park’s amphitheater with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. A group of 8 of us took snacks, wine, and quilts. The temperature was in the 60s which is completely abnormal for June 1st in Alabama and so we were all a little chilly! We all ended up covering up with the quilts we brought to sit on.

Just as I was starting to feel halfway decent about my cooking skills, I managed to completely kill my confidence by burning my toast Saturday morning. Oops.

Maybe I should start setting a timer?

Saturday we all headed to Lake Tuscaloosa and spent the whole day by the lake. Watermelon is the best lake food and it was a great day for the lake!

The rest of my weekend was spent being lazy and watching movies. Contraband with Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale and One for the Money with Katherine Heigl are both pretty good weekend rentals.

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend!!

Rock the White

Has anyone ever noticed that when you wear white, your chances of spilling something increase by about 1,472%? No, seriously.

This Friday I am trying something new and linking up for the first time with Long Distance Loving for Friday’s Fancies #79. The theme is Rock the White.

I know everyone says it’s fine to wear white year round now and that “Winter White” is perfectly acceptable. I have no issue with anyone else wearing white throughout the year. I however, still stand by the “no white from the waist down after Labor Day and before Easter”. I get so excited the weekend of Easter when I can dig all my white clothes out of my closet (yes, dig)!!

For today’s Friday’s Fancies: Rock the White, I chose to go with an always classic black and white stripe shirt by ENZA COSTA, EMPORIO ARMANI white linen pants, 4” heels by TIBI, and I paired the look with turquoise jewelry by STELLA & DOT (FYI – this is my current favorite jewelry line).
